It’s around 32 degrees centigrade in Hong Kong today. Walk outside and
the humidity plus heat will definitely make you want to have another
shower. So, I thought to myself this morning — the most important
invention is supposed to be the wheel but after feeling the temperature
indoors drop to a pleasant 20 degrees centigrade (12 degrees lesser),
the best invention has to be the air conditioner.

So, I decided to pay tributes to the smart soul who invented the A/C. I
Googled and found this
site. An excerpt:

“Hello. I am Willis Haviland Carrier, electrical engineer. But most of
you would know me as the “Father of cool”. That’s because I invented and
patented the air conditioner. Although I am famous for inventing the air
conditioner, I also invented the centrifugal refrigeration machine.

My most famous invention, the air conditioner, came to me one night
while I was waiting for the bus. Before the idea slipped away I draw a
model on a napkin. How it works in simple terms is the machine takes the
air in through the filter. Then it passes the air over metal coils and
then circles around the motor. See, when the air is circulating around
the motor, it cools, making it more comfortable on hot days. The air
conditioner was finally patented in 1911, years after my discovery.”

Well, he makes it sound simple, doesn’t he! That’s why the brand name
“Carrier” (it’s all coming to me now!)

Mr. Carrier, thank you (he passed away in 1950 but I am sure they have
internet connections in heaven).
Also, I would like to thank the dude who invented electricity, the dude
who invented the internet (I was told it was some organization called
ARPA) and the founders of Google.

The world’s much easier and more comfortable now.
