HKTR (Hong Kong Trash Removers) clean up Mac 2 and Sharp Peak
Hong Kong Trail Runners put on their Samaritan hats to become Hong Kong Trash Removers. The idea was to restore the beauty of Sharp Peak by getting rid of all the garbage on the peak. Prior to the hike, I received intelligence reports stating that a recent cleanup crew had already cleaned up Sharp Peak, so I only wanted about 10-15 Samaritans instead of the 25+ people who had volunteered. However, what we realized on this cleanup hike was that no amount of helping hands can ever be too much to clean up our trails! Maclehose 2 was one heck of a dump yard! Here, take a look:

The group got divided into two; Wotan led the first group on 4 legs (she’s a dog) and I led the second Garbage Unit consisting of 5 people. We barely walked 200 meters before our garbage bags started to become full! The trails by the side of the concrete Mac 2 path are really a dump yard. In spite of our garbage removal efforts, it is still home to all kinds of garbage.
The garbage bags are out and we’re barely 200m from Pak Tam Au
Bottles don’t belong here!

Bags are getting full…
Natural trash — (no, not Roger) I mean this honeycomb
Roger found himself a spare shoe — he will be wearing them on the next race

This is what we collected in the first 30 minutes!

The Garbage Group
I was always wondering why Phil was interested in cleaning up garbage. I knew that he must have had an ulterior motive. His motive became clear when he dug out a Vibram sole and a sexy looking hat which I am sure he proudly took back home! He was there to treasure hunt!
Phil’s got an ax to grind — he’s the proud owner of a Vibram sole

We are the Trash Busters
And, finally, after disposing off several garbage bags containing filthy trash, we treated ourselves to a well deserved meal.
Trash Busters — Team 1
Trash Busters — Team 2
1. Our trails are more filthy than imagined! We only cleaned parts of Mac 2. The beaches are a disaster.
2. The more Trash Busters we have, the better. Richard raised a good point. We should divide the trail we want to clean into several sections and assign teams of Trash Busters to each section. That’s the most efficient way of achieving a thorough clean up
3. Should not be directly behind Roger on a trail as he tends to release Hydrogen Sulfide into the atmosphere at frequent intervals
A very big “thank you” and round of applause to everyone who participated. Our trails are a lot cleaner because of our consolidated effort. Please let us know which trails in Hong Kong next need our love and care. The Hong Kong Trash Removers will be back.
