Gorgeous, isn’t it? Like I’ve mentioned numerous amount of times, you need money in Hong Kong and it can be one of the best places in the world!

Our leader for this hike to Junk peak was Ken Wong and the meeting point was Hang Hau MTR station (purple line) at 1100 hrs.

To start off the hike, we had to take a taxi to Sai Kung where the hike was to begin. Ken was cunningly hoping that only 5 of us would join the hike so that the taxi fare could be split equally! We had six members! Two Trampers were worried that they weren’t carrying enough water and Ken warned them of ‘waterless’ consequences, sending them scuttling away to 7 Eleven for supplies!

It wasn’t long before we got our first beautiful glimpse of the abundant Sai Kung scenery.

Our trail soon led us to a point where a couple of guys were playing with their cool model airplanes. One navigator demonstrated a cheeky summersault move with his plane causing it to crash a few centimetres away from my leg! (This means war!)

Going further down the trail, we encountered another kind of flying species – a species of eagle. Vivian (an ornithologist) pointed out the name of this species but it wasn’t long before the name escaped my mind.

After being educated on birds and planes, it was time for lunch! In keeping the spirit of education, Warren was enlightening us on the reason for Bollywood movies to have songs and dance sequences as part of a typical movie. Ken chipped in with his expertise as well.

The most important educative fact for the day came from Ken. Beach swimmers, watch out! You’re not going to like this.

According to Ken, the bubbly white stretch of water alongside the islands, is treated sewage! The wind does its part by blowing this treated sewage towards the bay; meaning, swimmers, you might want to take another shower.

Our last enlightenment for the day came from abundant Tibetian inscriptions which were hung from trees (?!) We were puzzled and none of us knew what the inscriptions meant, much less what they were doing in a trail which was hardly populated!

And, before I forget, we witnessed yet another amazing variety of species today. Flying chicken! One of them even had horns!

In summary, this hike was much more than a physical workout; it was educational and informative too.
